South Waikato News - - SPORT - By MICHAEL WHITE

Putaruru Senior A won a hard fought encounter against a determined and aggressive Frankton side in Hamilton on Saturday.

Tim McIvor opened the scoring with a penalty after a series of forward drives when Frankton were caught offside. Frankton replied with a converted try after some smart back play. The half-time score was 3-7 as both sides failed to convert opportunities into points.

In the second half, Alex Graham charged over to score a great try after another forward attack for Putaruru to take the lead. Putaruru scored a further try from a wellworked move where Shaun Dixon linked with the Watkins brothers to extend the lead.

Frankton weren’t giving up and scored again after a fortuitous bounce to close the gap to 13-12. This made for a nervous last 10 minutes, however Putaruru were good enough to hold on.

The game was marred by several incidents of foul play by the hosts and Putaruru did well to maintain discipline and not retaliate.

In the forward pack Alex Graham and Jimmy McCreery stood out, while Andrew White was solid at the back.

In the earlier games, Putaruru Senior B beat their Frankton counterparts 39-22 and at Melville the Putaruru Under 19 won 66-0.
