Surf thrashed Frankton 51-3 in Hamilton.

First five-eighth Sam McLeod put Surf into a 3-0 lead early in the match when he slotted a drop goal. These were the only points scored in the first half which turned into a hard-fought tussle as both teams attacked and defended vigorously. Frankton had dominance at scrum time and parity at the lineout but Surf’s trademark scrambling defence saw many a Frankton raid come to nothing. Surf wisely used the wind advantage, plugging the left-hand corner. This tactic took its toll on the Frankton forwards who eventually ran out of steam in the second spell, allowing Surf to hammer home their superior fitness and ball control. Frankton hit back early in the sec- ond half with a drop goal 3-3. In the 48th minute Surf went on the attack and were rewarded with a penalty, converted by San McLeod. In the 53rd minute, lock Ash Haywood burst through Frankton’s flagging defence to score Surf’s first try 11-3, followed three minutes later by prop Herb Leef 18-3. In the 67th minute flanker and part-time winger John Balvert scored the first of five trys in the remaining 13 minutes as Frankton capitulated 25-3. Replacement winger Tana Albert was next to score in the 71st minute 30-3. In the 74th minute Walter Downey dotted down 37-3. Jason Campbell was next, scoring in the 77th minute 44-3. Chance Brown scored the final try after busting through the Frankton defence once again 51-3.
