After a lengthy stint away from the music spotlight, Tokoroa country music singer Valerie Joyce has returned with amazing results.

Joyce performed at the Auckland Country Music Awards, winning the gospel section and runner-up overall in the veteran’s section.

Joyce said there were around 75 singers in the competition who saw her perform 10,000 Angels Cried for her final gospel performance.

While she has been singing publicly since she was 25 years old, Joyce admitted that she still became nervous because competition judges were critiquing vocal technique including diction.

Joyce also wanted to use her success in Auckland to help promote country music in Tokoroa, saying more young people should take part in country music clubs.
