Motorists flout rules at busy intersection

South Waikato News - - NEWS -

A recent monitor of traffic at the intersection on Chambers St reveals that many drivers are not stopping before turning on to State Highway 1.

Last week for around 45 minutes, the intersection was monitored and revealed 26 drivers turning left onto State Highway 1 did not stop while five vehicles did stop. Of those turning right, 19 vehicles stopped and six did not.

Taupo Road Policing Group Acting Senior Sergeant Murray Hamilton said those breaking the law were both locals and from out of town. ‘‘Unfortunately when we monitor this intersection we find a large number of people do not stop, both locals and out-of-towners.’’

He said the intersection was monitored randomly. ‘‘When we stop and talk to people about stop signs, everyone can tell us what is required of them. Unfortunately a lot of people do not put this into practice. The only way that people tend to learn is from either getting a ticket or having a crash. As we don’t want people to crash, our only option is through enforcement. ’’

CHAMBERS STREET: The intersection is an area where many drivers don’t adhere to the road signs.
