Ella’s art­work earns lunch­box poster win

Win­tec jour­nal­ism stu­dent Am­is­field School stu­dent Ella Cal­laghan re­cently won the year 1-3 sec­tion of the 2011 Na­tional Lunch­box Day competition.

Ella’s poster won her the in­di­vid­ual prize of an iPod Nano and won the school $ 500 worth of books.

Prin­ci­pal Matt Saba­p­a­thy said this was a re­mark­able achieve­ment for Ella and the school.

‘‘Ella was re­warded with some­thing even I don’t have, a brand new iPod Nano,’’ he said.

Lunch­box Day is part of the FoodS­mart Clean, Cook and Chill pro­gramme. The day was ini­ti­ated to en­cour­age schools around the coun­try to ex­plore the con­cept of food safety and the im­por­tance of a healthy lunch­box. A par­tic­u­lar fo­cus was put on ways to keep lunch­boxes cool so that food was not con­tam­i­nated by bac­te­ria.

Schools were pro­vided re­sources to ad­dress health and phys­i­cal ed­u­ca­tion, lit­er­acy, science and tech­nol­ogy learn­ing ar­eas in the New Zealand cur­ricu­lum.
