Weather still a concern
10 years ago Amy plays her way to finals
appearance February 7, 2001 The South Waikato was well represented at the World Youth Touch Championships held in Auckland.
Along with Willie Bishop, Tokoroa’s Amy Turner performed well on the field during the recent world youth touch championships.
Like former Tokoroa youth Willie Bishop who captained the New Zealand Boys’ Under-18 team to victory ( South Waikato News Wednesday, January 31), Turner was part of the girls team who made it to the final against Australia before going down 3-1.
John Whittaker, coached the under-18 boys while his wife Shelley Whittaker managed the under-20 women’s team which also went through to a final against Australia going down 7-4.
Other Tokoroa involvement during the tournament came in the form of Kerry Brown, who was on the referees’ panel.
Teams from England, South Africa, Japan, the Cook Islands, Niue, Samoa, Lebanon and Australia combined with the six New Zealand and Maori teams.
25 years ago Vandals in the dog box
March 13, 1986 The kennels from which Tokoroa’s SPCA was ‘‘evicted’’ following noise complaints have been the scene of a spate of wanton vandalism.
And Tokoroa branch president Mrs Shirley Croxon said she hoped the same residents who complained about the first noise complaints might be able to help the branch this time.
‘‘Looking at the mess at the kennels it’s clear the vandals have had a ball and made a fair bit of noise in the process,’’ she said.
‘‘I hope that nearby residents may have heard something.’’
50 years ago Town gardens suffer November 23, 1961 Gardens in Tokoroa received a severe setback on Sunday morning when the temperature fell to 26.3 degrees Fahrenheit, which would generally be regarded as 5.7 degrees of frost.
The temperature, before a ground frost is recorded, must drop to 30.3 degrees Fahrenheit, which means that the actual frost on Sunday morning was four degrees but this was more than sufficient to affect tender young vegetables, particularly tomatoes.
SUCCESS: Touch rugby coaches John and Shelly Whittaker show their impressive haul.
