Closing in on target
The South Waikato Sport and Events Centre has secured $750,000 from another large funding organisation.
South Waikato District Council has confirmed that the New Zealand Lotteries Commission will give that amount towards the South Waikato Sport and Events Centre.
‘‘It is awesome to see large funders supporting this project. So far we have received the full amounts for our three applications to large funders. This is such a tremendous response and we are very thrilled that these organisations can see the potential in what we are trying to achieve,’’ South Waikato Mayor Neil Sinclair said.
‘‘This latest grant brings us that much closer to reaching our 90 per cent funding target to start construction,’’ South Waikato District Council chief executive, David Hall said.
‘‘It is now crunch time and the council still has a fair way to go in the next few weeks. We’re in the last 100 metres, we can almost see the finish line,’’ Mr Sinclair said. ‘‘ We are really counting on some further financial assistance to achieve the total funding milestone.
‘‘The council is still working positively with a number of other organisations to attract further funding. We have also received a great deal of support from community organisations like the South Waikato Sport and Leisure Board as it has sent applied to Pub Charity to help fund scoreboards, whiteboards, netball and basketball fixtures and some other extras,’’ he said.
The council has now secured more than $ 1,500,000 from external funders for the centre.
The council has received the building consent and is working through this process with the project manager. Building is expected to start late September 2011 and be complete by September/October 2012.
The council will be developing a link on its website so the community can access updates.
