Tokoroa’s Pius Te Wake can remember the day he was asked to pose for a photo holding the Rugby World Cup.
‘‘It was 1987 and I was 11 years old at the time. I was walking home from town when this man asked if I wanted to be in a photo for the
with the Rugby World Cup. I said yeah and we posed and then I went home.’’
Mr Te Wake, now 35, is pictured with Tokoroa-based Waikato Rugby Football Union official Alby Rowan.
Mr Te Wake had no idea at that time that he would be one of only a few that would touch the World Cup while it was in New Zealand’s possession.
It has been 24 years since New Zealand won the World Cup and with the World Cup kicking off this Friday, Mr Te Wake hopes that New Zealand can end the drought. ‘‘I hope we win it, we have the players to do it.’’
