Tokoroa has best team outside of Auckland

South Waikato News - - NEWS -

The Tokoroa High School league team came fourth in the National Secondary Schools League Tournament which was a huge achievement for the boys – the only nonAuckland team to make the top four.

The team attracted a lot of support at the tournament and were nicknamed the ‘‘Giant Killers’’ by outside groups due to defeating strong teams in pool play. The semi-finals saw the team below strength with several injuries after being battered by huge Pacific Island boys all week.

The side also featured on TV3 sports news and the Crowd Goes Wild.

Members of the Tokoroa squad were also awarded accolades at the tournament: Yannis Mea – pride and passion (one from each team selected); Tama Teaukura – best coach at tournament; and Axl Kingi – New Zealand Secondary Schools tournament team.

Six boys are now in talks with scouts from Newcastle Knights, Roosters and Manly.
