New LIC research role for experienced geneticist
Dr Richard Spelman has been appointed to the new role of general manager research and development for dairy farmer co-operative LIC.
Originally from the Manawatu, Dr Spelman is a quantitative geneticist.
With a bachelor of agricultural science from Massey University his career with LIC began in 1991 as a livestock selection analyst in the sire proving scheme.
He returned to Massey in 1994 to complete his masters, followed by a doctorate from Wageningen University in The Netherlands before returning to LIC in 1998 as a senior scientist and research leader.
Dr Spelman led the research on genomic selection and oversaw the changes in LIC’s breeding scheme with the integration of this new technology.
