New LIC re­search role for ex­pe­ri­enced ge­neti­cist

Dr Richard Spel­man has been ap­pointed to the new role of gen­eral man­ager re­search and de­vel­op­ment for dairy farmer co-op­er­a­tive LIC.

Orig­i­nally from the Manawatu, Dr Spel­man is a quan­ti­ta­tive ge­neti­cist.

With a bach­e­lor of agri­cul­tural sci­ence from Massey Univer­sity his ca­reer with LIC be­gan in 1991 as a live­stock se­lec­tion an­a­lyst in the sire prov­ing scheme.

He re­turned to Massey in 1994 to com­plete his masters, fol­lowed by a doc­tor­ate from Wageningen Univer­sity in The Nether­lands be­fore re­turn­ing to LIC in 1998 as a se­nior sci­en­tist and re­search leader.

Dr Spel­man led the re­search on ge­nomic se­lec­tion and over­saw the changes in LIC’s breed­ing scheme with the in­te­gra­tion of this new tech­nol­ogy.
