Talking pole will hold community signatures
The Tokoroa Talking Poles Symposium 2012 is fast approaching and a community signature pole will be created.
The symposium will be held in Tokoroa from February 20 to March 19 next year.
Tokoroa Talking Poles Trust chairwoman Mariata Couch is inviting community participation.
‘‘We are wanting to involve community groups, schools, kindergartens, rest homes, Lions Clubs,’’ she said.
‘‘It’s not going to be like the symposium of the past where there have been artists brought in to Tokoroa . . . It’s going to be about the participation, the community participation.’’
Ms Couch said the pole would be covered in tiles created by members of the community.
‘‘It is going to be a pole with a difference. It’s a community pole, what we are hoping to do is create tiles. We are asking each member of the community to come and place whatever they want on it,’’ she said.
‘‘They can write poetry on it, handprints, baby’s footprint, whatever they want.’’
Ms Couch said the pole had been called the Signature Pole because each tile was going to hold each person’s signature.
She said the pole’s height depended on the number of tiles created.
‘‘We hope to have a three-sided pole, steel framed and we will mount the tiles . . . Everything that is left over will then be mounted onto boards and they will become board art that can be used around community buildings.’’
During the symposium people can head along and spend as much time as they need creating their tile with supervisors on hand to lend inspiration.
‘‘We’ll get five year olds here in Tokoroa come along and they will create this tile and they will go off and live their lives.
‘‘Then 50 years later they will return to Tokoroa and stop in to find their tile.’’
