Awards night a great success
The Raukawa Maori Language Awards were a great success with local business, community members and schools celebrated for their dedication to te reo Maori.
Raukawa Charitable Trust organiser Charlie Tepana said the night was spectacular.
‘‘It was amazing, having Te Taura Whiri i te Reo board chair Erima Henare speak at our awards proved the hard work of not only Raukawa but our entire community is bearing fruits. Erima’s positive words have motivated us to continue to reach higher levels.’’
Mr Tepana said the food was extraordinary with event- goers impressed with the selection.
‘‘When the oysters came out you could hear people going oh, ahh, around the room, it was funny.’’
The lifetime commitment supreme award went to June Maanga Ormsby.
Mrs Ormsby, a well-known kuia in the South Waikato, was commended for her commitment to the reo.
‘‘This was our way of honouring our kuia for her long term, high level commitment to te reo Maori.’’
Mr Tepana would like to thank the community for their support.
‘‘For a small town like ours we are supportive and committed to helping each other and making things happen. I am truly thankful to everyone that participated in the awards and to the community for their ongoing support.’’
Raukawa would like to thank the sponsors Ma Te Reo, Mighty River Power, Te Puni Kokiri, Westpac and Te Wananga o Aotearoa for making the night a great success.
South Waikato News will run a photo spread next week of the awards.
