Awards night a great suc­cess

The Raukawa Maori Lan­guage Awards were a great suc­cess with lo­cal busi­ness, com­mu­nity mem­bers and schools cel­e­brated for their ded­i­ca­tion to te reo Maori.

Raukawa Char­i­ta­ble Trust or­gan­iser Char­lie Tepana said the night was spec­tac­u­lar.

‘‘It was amaz­ing, hav­ing Te Taura Whiri i te Reo board chair Erima Henare speak at our awards proved the hard work of not only Raukawa but our en­tire com­mu­nity is bear­ing fruits. Erima’s pos­i­tive words have mo­ti­vated us to con­tinue to reach higher lev­els.’’

Mr Tepana said the food was ex­tra­or­di­nary with event- go­ers im­pressed with the se­lec­tion.

‘‘When the oys­ters came out you could hear peo­ple go­ing oh, ahh, around the room, it was funny.’’

The life­time com­mit­ment supreme award went to June Maanga Ormsby.

Mrs Ormsby, a well-known kuia in the South Waikato, was com­mended for her com­mit­ment to the reo.

‘‘This was our way of hon­our­ing our kuia for her long term, high level com­mit­ment to te reo Maori.’’

Mr Tepana would like to thank the com­mu­nity for their sup­port.

‘‘For a small town like ours we are sup­port­ive and com­mit­ted to help­ing each other and mak­ing things hap­pen. I am truly thank­ful to ev­ery­one that par­tic­i­pated in the awards and to the com­mu­nity for their on­go­ing sup­port.’’

Raukawa would like to thank the spon­sors Ma Te Reo, Mighty River Power, Te Puni Kokiri, West­pac and Te Wananga o Aotearoa for mak­ing the night a great suc­cess.
