Regional selections for the 2012 National St John Youth Cadet Competitions took place in Ohakune.

A group of four senior cadets from Tokoroa’s youth division and a Putaruru senior cadet competed to represent the Central Region.

Kaetyn Grace, Valeska Martis, Robyn Phayer (all aged 13), Jordyn Whangapirita, 14, and Putaruru’s 15-year-old Ryan Watkin competed for places in the four teams, individual selection and four emergency groups to head to Queenstown next year.

As well as interviews, a panel of selectors assessed the cadets on their skills in drill procedures and first aid scenarios.

South Waikato Area youth manager Ngaire Hewson said the nationals were considered one of the highest levels of representation in the youth programme.

‘‘The national youth competition and festival is the ultimate level of competition, camaraderie and friendship, and we want to be part of it,’’ Ms Hewson said.

Team places are to be named this Friday.
