Bridge building begins
Construction is now under way on the replacement Atiamuri Bridge on State Highway 1 says the New Zealand Transport Agency.
Work started on the $ 24 million project in November 2011 and a celebration ceremony held on site last Friday, celebrated construction being under way.
The event was also an occasion to acknowledge the benefits of the new bridge and its approaches to road users and the economy once completed about mid2013.
Joining the agency at the celebration were MP Louise Upston, South Waikato District Council Mayor Neil Sinclair, iwi and guests from the wider Atiamuri community, including Upper Atiamuri School.
‘‘The Atiamuri Bridge Replacement Project recognises the importance the New Zealand Transport Agency places on ensuring its main routes are reliable and can carry their volumes of freight and traffic,’’ said the agency’s Waikato/ Bay of Plenty regional director, Harry Wilson.
