Bridge build­ing be­gins

Con­struc­tion is now un­der way on the re­place­ment Ati­a­muri Bridge on State High­way 1 says the New Zealand Trans­port Agency.

Work started on the $ 24 mil­lion project in Novem­ber 2011 and a cel­e­bra­tion cer­e­mony held on site last Fri­day, cel­e­brated con­struc­tion be­ing un­der way.

The event was also an oc­ca­sion to ac­knowl­edge the ben­e­fits of the new bridge and its ap­proaches to road users and the econ­omy once com­pleted about mid2013.

Join­ing the agency at the cel­e­bra­tion were MP Louise Up­ston, South Waikato Dis­trict Coun­cil Mayor Neil Sin­clair, iwi and guests from the wider Ati­a­muri com­mu­nity, in­clud­ing Up­per Ati­a­muri School.

‘‘The Ati­a­muri Bridge Re­place­ment Project recog­nises the im­por­tance the New Zealand Trans­port Agency places on en­sur­ing its main routes are re­li­able and can carry their vol­umes of freight and traf­fic,’’ said the agency’s Waikato/ Bay of Plenty re­gional di­rec­tor, Harry Wil­son.
