Tokoroa AFC play host to Pukekohe

South Waikato News - - SPORT -

Tokoroa AFC hosted four teams from Pukekohe on Saturday.

The men’s reserve team kicked things off with a game against the Pukekohe Old Boys.

The visiting team showed all their experience, by using their youth players up front, causing all sorts of problems for the Tokoroa back four.

The Tokoroa team managed to pull the scoreline back, with three goals of their own in the second half. Final score 7- 3.

Next was the ladies who showed that all their preseason hard work was paying off, with a convincing 3 nil win.

The youth teams game started at a fast and furious pace, seeing the young Tokoroa team take an early lead, through Logan Allen who found himself in space on the edge of the box, taking his chance well with a low hard drive into the far post.

Pukekohe managed to pull one back. But Tokoroa were awarded a penalty and upstepped Logan, who confidently smashed the ball into the back of the net.

Pukekohe found their feet in the second half and seemed to be enjoying a good share of possession. But with fifteen minutes remaining, Connor Wood beat his marker and made a determined run to the byeline, then cutting the ball back across the face of goal, with an onrushing Logan Allen striking the ball home to complete his hatrick. Final score 3-1. A great start to the year for the young guys, and from that first up effort, are going to cause some problems for their opposition this year.

The clubs respective first teams were next to take the field.

Pukekohe have had some good results in the last few weeks, so Tokoroa knew this was going to be a tough first up hitout. Pukekohe had the bulk of the possession, but Tokoroa defended well.

Pukekohe took a one nil lead into the second half. Des Phillips levelled things up with a well taken long range effort, leaving the Pukekohe goalie dumbfounded. Game ending in a draw.

A lot of positives to be taken from this game but, still alot of work if Tokoroa are to be competitive in the Fed2 league this year.

This is the fifth year the clubs have had this preseason exchange, and this is the first time Tokoroa have managed to beat Pukekohe on aggregate. Showing things are on the up at Strathmore Park.

In two weeks time Tokoroa AFC will see Rotorua United visit with four teams.
