Gaby to manage sports centre
South Waikato District Council has appointed Heather Gaby as the manager for the South Waikato Sport and Events Centre currently under construction, and she is expected to start towards the end of July.
Mrs Gaby has been an advocate for encouraging the community to live a healthy lifestyle in her many roles throughout the years.
She owned the Les Mills aerobics franchise in Tokoroa for eight years and worked at the South Waikato YMCA while her family was young, before returning to fulltime employment close to 17 years ago with Sport Waikato.
‘‘Mrs Gaby’s role with Sport Waikato has meant strong involvement with a large cross section of all communities within the district, including preschools, schools, community groups, sports clubs, businesses, aged centres and other organisations,’’ said the council’s chief executive David Hall.
‘‘The council believes that this has given her a great grounding to go into the community and develop activities and encourage opportunities for the facility. Now that the manager has been appointed, the months leading up to the opening of the centre in early November will be a busy time.’’
Mrs Gaby said: ‘‘When the role of manager for the new South Waikato Sport and Events Centre came up, I saw it as the next step for me to work within a similar field but also to widen my reach into the community. I believe this facility has huge potential to create something positive for our community.
‘‘I’m looking forward to working with local groups to make the centre the hub for sport and events in the district. There are so many possibilities for its use and it will be exciting developing them all.’’
The panel that selected Mrs Gaby consisted of members from the Leisure Services Board and community assets manager, Roger Fisher.
Cr Jenny Shattock who is also on the Leisure Services Committee and sister of Heather Gaby was not on the panel.
