South Waikato News - - SPORT -

The Putaruru Seniors did battle against Kereone, and they were keen for revenge to make up for a loss early in the season.

It was a special weekend for the club with three loyal and hardworking players presented with Blazers for playing 30 games for the Putaruru Senior As. A massive milestone for players Shaun Dixon, Riki Baigent and Frankie Merriman.

The Senior A game had all the hallmarks of a hard footy battle – the work started up front with forwards having to muscle up against a very physical and well-drilled Kereone forward pack.

The loose forward trio of Tom White, Shaun Dickson and Ricki Baigent again proved a hand full for the opposition, winning the breakdown battle and wereall around the park on defence.

Lineout machine and player of the day Frank Merriman was dominate at line time, stealing two crucial balls which resulted in points.

This was a win built around the defence of the forwards.

The Putaruru backline attack was a real handful with Kyle Savage at the helm at 1st-five directing play extremely well and was instrumental in setting up hard-running Chris Hodgson for a try.

The winning of the game came from super boot Allan Gilchrist, nailing two long-range penalties to seal the win for Putaruru.

The final score at 16-13 was a real reflection of the quality and tightness of the game, a real pleasure to see some fine grass roots footy.

The Putaruru Senior Bs played against a solid Kereone side.

It was an exciting match as both teams were prepared to give the ball some air, and the crowd were certainly entertained, unfortunately the home side couldn’t pull off the win going down 17-12.

The Putaruru Under-21s cemented their place in the top 4 with a thrilling last-minute win against University, 20-13. It was a game in which saw the lead change through the match.

The decisive moment come when the Putaruru 1st-five Shey Luke Ellis chipped over the University backline and regathered the ball to score an individually brilliant try.

The club is very proud of this crop of talent, so get down and see them when you can.
