Council set to cover water security

-

The Department of Health is funding $176,000 towards the installation of an ultra-violet (UV) disinfection unit for the water supply in Putaruru.

The total cost of the project is close to $ 300,000, with the remaining $124,000 being paid for out of council’s water supply reserves. South Waikato District Council Services Manager Andrew Pascoe explained what the installation of the unit will do.

‘‘Surface water sources like lakes and springs can’t achieve full security against contamination. So for the Blue Spring supply to adhere to the [Water quality standards] we have to install barriers like the UV treatment. Council is in the process of obtaining security against contamination for the bore supply at Glenshea Park so we won’t have to install UV treatment.’’ Mr Pascoe said.
