POWER FACTS

South Waikato News - - FARMING -

Transpower’s North Island Grid upgrade: 400kV power line running from Whakamaru near Taupo through Waikato to Auckland. 426 steel power pylons covering 185km. $824 million in Transpower expenditure. $165m in “easement” compensation paid to 308 landowners. Quirky facts: The power lines weigh about 7000 tonnes, equal to about 7 million bags of sugar. The 426 pylons weigh about 18,000 tonnes, equal to about 15,000 family cars. There are about 5000km of optical fibre cable with the earthwire. More than 1.5 million bolts have been tightened so far. If the 61 separate strands of the power line were laid end-to-end, they would stretch more than 213,000km and reach more than halfway to the Moon.
