Leg of beaten dog ‘was just hanging’

South Waikato News - - NEWS/OPINION -

South Waikato SPCA shelter manager Lorna Hutchinson is urging all residents to alert authorities if they hear an animal being abused.

Mrs Hutchinson’s calls comes after her unit had to euthanase a 12-month-old labrador cross a month ago after it received horrific abuse in Tokoroa.

‘‘I have had three different complaints for three different dogs. One dog actually had its leg broken in two places.’’

Mrs Hutchinson said a neighbour stood on the other side of the fence and heard the dog scream, once she peered over, the owner said he did not cause the dog’s shriek.

‘‘Apparently it has been a regular thing for this dog to receive a hiding,’’ she said.

‘‘When they brought the dog down here and it got out of the car, its leg was just hanging.’’

Another recent case where a dog was allegedly beaten saw a veterinary bill surpass $1000.

‘‘Quite often there are witnesses to the beating but they don’t want to be identified,’’ Mrs Hutchinson said.
