Blue skies smile at golf scram­ble

There were noth­ing but blue skies on Wed­nes­day for the Vet’s Scram­ble at the Toko­roa Golf Club.

Robin Ire­land took top hon­ours with 37 stable­ford points, fol­lowed closely by Tom Hayes, John Kawenga and Den­nis Du­gan all with 36 points.

Alan Fos­ter played a good round, also win­ning the long­est putt of the day.

De­spite the best ef­forts of all those com­pet­ing, no twos were scored so the prize pool jack­pots.

Quar­ter fi­nals of the Men’s Club Champs were played on Satur­day. Grey skies and a sharp breeze had no ad­verse ef­fect on a high stan­dard of golf.

Sev­eral epic match­play bat­tles de­serve a men­tion: Dar­ren Costar v Tom Hayes, John Bart­ley v Henry Skel­ton all played 19 holes in the fiercely con­tested in­ter­me­di­ate grade.

A stam­ina- test­ing 20 holes were played be­tween club pres­i­dent Barry Preece and Lions pres­i­dent Jon Welch, with Jon even­tu­ally vic­to­ri­ous. Con­grat­u­la­tions to all who com­peted on Satur­day – your par­tic­i­pa­tion made for an ex­cit­ing day.
