Cy­clist off to worlds

Prepa­ra­tion has al­ready be­gun for cy­clist Jim McMur­ray who has qual­i­fied for the world cham­pi­onships next year.

The Forest­land Wheel­ers Cy­cling Club mem­ber has qual­i­fied for the 2013 UCI Road World Cham­pi­onships, which will be held in Italy dur­ing Septem­ber.

Mr McMur­ray said it will be the 80th Road World Cham­pi­onships and the first time the event will take place in Tus­cany, one of the heart­lands of Ital­ian cy­cling. There will be 477 starters in his cat­e­gory (50-55 years) and 4200 riders in to­tal.

‘‘There are only 15 events world­wide that peo­ple can ride to qual­ify to go to the world champs. There are two events at the champs, one is the time trial 28km and the road race 140km,’’ he said.
