was nominated for the volunteer of the year award at the NZRFU Steinlager Rugby Awards in Auckland last week.

Although top honours went to John George of Taranaki, Mr Wilson said it was a night to remember with many wellknown rugby faces present including past All Black Tane Norton and Rugby News editor Bob Howitt.

In its first year, the volunteer of the year award is awarded to a volunteer in recognition of their efforts to the sport of rugby over the past year.

Mr Wilson’s involvement in rugby spans 15 years and includes the recent Roller Mills tournament in Tokoroa. 25 years ago World champ hands over crown July 2, 1987

Over the last month members of the Tokoroa Scrabble Club have been completing their own club championships.

As expected, the competition was much closer than in previous years and was in doubt until the final game.

Club champion over the past three years, Kevin Edgeler had to be content withthe runner-up position this year in the wake of Florence Veldhuizen, who won six of her seven games to win the Betty Price Salver for 1987.

Edgeler, in finishing runner-up won five of his seven games.

Mrs Veldhuizen’s run of good form started at the national championships over Queen’s Birthday weekend where she won the national C-grade title.

The next club trophy to be decided is the Ann Plested Competition Night Points Trophy, and with only five points separating Kevin Edgeler and Florence Veldhuizen, another epic ‘‘battle of words’’ is likely. 50 years ago Not referees – coaches are at fault May 17, 1962

When Athletic played Hodderville, in the third grade competition last Saturday, the referee considered there was too much swearing going on.

His comments on the match were considered by the South Waikato Rugby Sub-Union on Monday evening.

It was decided that any player would be given one warning and, if he persisted, would then be brought up before the judicial subcommittee. It could then take suitable action.

NOMINATION: Barry Wilson has been nominated for the volunteer of the year award at the NZRFU Steinlager Rugby Awards in Auckland.
