HOLDEN VOLT POWER PLANT: Voltec electric drive system comprising a 111 kW drive motor and 55 kW generator motor, total power output 111 kW, torque output 370 Nm at 250-2800 rpm. Petrol generator is a 1.4-litre DOHC engine offering 63 kW at 4800 rpm. RUNNING GEAR: Front-wheel drive. Continuously variable automatic transaxle. MacPherson strut front suspension, torsion beam setup at the rear. Electric power steer. HOW BIG: Length 4498mm, width 1788mm, height 1439mm, wheelbase 2685mm. Cargo volume 300 litres. HOW MUCH: $85,000. WHAT’S GOOD: Futuristic-looking electric vehicle with good interior room and – most importantly – range of up to 600 kilometres. WHAT’S NOT: Despite its medium-car size, it is definitely a four seater. High initial price could be an issue. OUR VERDICT: Volt is picking up numerous awards, including North American and European car of the year. Little wonder – Volt really does represent the future now.
