Shield’s first contenders
Putaruru will take on Ngati Awa’s Te Rae o Kohi rugby team for the Steve Ahu Memorial Shield.
Organised by Putaruru’s Jim Ngati and Mark Hotham with Ngati Awa representatives Wendy Swales and Anthony Reuben, this match is set to be electrifying.
The late Steve Ahu was a formidable force for the Putaruru Athletics Rugby Club in the 1970s.
Playing loosehead prop, Ahu’s talents were spotted by Wai- kato early on but for health reasons he was unable to try for the team.
Mr Ngati who was friends with Ahu, said he was a well known figure in Putaruru and Tokoroa rugby circles, and his death six years ago was felt throughout Putaruru and in Ahu’s home in Whakatane.
The shield was proposed this year to commemorate Ahu and his love of rugby.
The match will be played this Saturday at the Putaruru Rugby Club at 1pm.
