Mcmur­ray makes Cran­leigh seem easy

Forest­land Wheel­ers Cy­cling Club mem­ber Jim McMur­ray lived up to his rep­u­ta­tion as be­ing the best on tour af­ter win­ning first over­all, first in age group and fourth fastest time in elite in the Cran­leigh K2 re­cently.

The 192km ride, which saw around 605 riders com­pete, was held at the end of Oc­to­ber and took riders from Tairua, Coro­man­del, Thames and Whi­tianga.

Mr McMur­ray said his re­sults were re­ward­ing con­sid­er­ing how dif­fi­cult the race was. ‘‘The first half of the race pace was steady only (as the race is so long) then from Thames on­wards the pace went on. My­self and two oth­ers broke clear from the lead group of 30 riders. On the Kope climb ( 13km) we made a good break of two min­utes and we worked hard to the fin­ish, ap­prox­i­mately 30km, and took the lead out to 3 min­utes, then fin­ished first af­ter the sprint.’’
