Clocking a career best
Hard work definitely pays off; just ask cyclist Jim McMurray.
The Forestland Wheelers Cycling Club member finished first in the two- lap Enduro event ( 320km) at the Taupo Cycle Challenge.
In finishing first he also set a new course record of 9 hours 6 minutes, breaking the previous record by 22 minutes.
‘‘That was the fifth time I have done the two laps,’’ he said.
McMurray has won the two- lap event on three occasions but the last result is the best in his career.
There were 88 riders in his field for the race which began at 1.30am on November 25.
‘‘(The) weather was perfect and a group of seven formed after about 15km and stayed together for the next 80km then there was only three left in the front group,’’ he said.
He said that the winning break came at the 275km mark when he rode to the finish and won by 30 minutes.
Mr McMurray said this success puts him in good stead for the 2013 UCI Road World Championships in Italy next year.
