SURF’S up at top of division
WINTEC journalism student The Southern United sevens rugby team have won division one of the inaugural Waikato Sevens championship at Te Awamutu.
After losing to Putaruru during pool play, the two teams met again in the final with SURF redeeming their prior loss, winning 22-10.
Captain Leigh Manu was impressed with the good turnout of experienced and younger players.
‘‘It was good to have subs this year, especially the younger guys who are really fit. It allowed the team to rotate nicely and not have to stay on the whole game,’’ he said.
‘‘We gelled well together for a team who only had two trainings.’’
Youngsters Brodi McCurran showcased solid defence while Te Raina Richards-Coxhead provided sharp attacking skills.
The team won $ 800 cash and $1000 worth of Kukri sports gear.
SURF will now be looking towards the next competition at Mount Maunganui after New Year.
