SURF’S up at top of di­vi­sion

WIN­TEC jour­nal­ism stu­dent The South­ern United sev­ens rugby team have won di­vi­sion one of the in­au­gu­ral Waikato Sev­ens cham­pi­onship at Te Awa­mutu.

Af­ter los­ing to Pu­taruru dur­ing pool play, the two teams met again in the fi­nal with SURF re­deem­ing their prior loss, win­ning 22-10.

Cap­tain Leigh Manu was im­pressed with the good turnout of ex­pe­ri­enced and younger play­ers.

‘‘It was good to have subs this year, es­pe­cially the younger guys who are really fit. It al­lowed the team to ro­tate nicely and not have to stay on the whole game,’’ he said.

‘‘We gelled well to­gether for a team who only had two train­ings.’’

Young­sters Brodi McCur­ran show­cased solid de­fence while Te Raina Richards-Cox­head pro­vided sharp at­tack­ing skills.

The team won $ 800 cash and $1000 worth of Kukri sports gear.

SURF will now be look­ing to­wards the next com­pe­ti­tion at Mount Maun­ganui af­ter New Year.
