Big year for top ath­letes

The best of South Waikato’s up-and-coming ath­letes were recog­nised by claim­ing top awards in their re­spec­tive fields at the Waikato Sec­ondary School Sports Awards re­cently.

For­est View High School stu­dent Jesse Clarke was named over­all win­ner in mo­tor cross and Pu­taruru Col­lege’s Ever­est Fitch won Sportswoman of the Year for lawn bowls.

The award cer­e­mony was held at Hoyts Cin­ema at Te Awa in Hamil­ton on De­cem­ber 2.

The ac­co­lades come af­ter a year of mon­u­men­tal success for the pair.

Ear­lier this year Ever­est, 13, was se­lected to for the Waikato Sec­ondary Schools Lawn Bowls team. Jesse, af­ter fin­ish­ing sev­enth in the Red Bull Romaniacs ex­treme en­duro in Ro­ma­nia, be­came the youngest rider to ever fin­ish the event.

On her win Ever­est said she is stoked with the recog­ni­tion. ‘‘It is good,’’ she said. ‘‘This is the first time I have won. I only started play­ing bowls this year. There was a op­por­tu­nity to play for Pu­taruru Lawn Bowls Club and I went along and thought that it was really cool.’’
