Big year for top athletes
The best of South Waikato’s up-and-coming athletes were recognised by claiming top awards in their respective fields at the Waikato Secondary School Sports Awards recently.
Forest View High School student Jesse Clarke was named overall winner in motor cross and Putaruru College’s Everest Fitch won Sportswoman of the Year for lawn bowls.
The award ceremony was held at Hoyts Cinema at Te Awa in Hamilton on December 2.
The accolades come after a year of monumental success for the pair.
Earlier this year Everest, 13, was selected to for the Waikato Secondary Schools Lawn Bowls team. Jesse, after finishing seventh in the Red Bull Romaniacs extreme enduro in Romania, became the youngest rider to ever finish the event.
On her win Everest said she is stoked with the recognition. ‘‘It is good,’’ she said. ‘‘This is the first time I have won. I only started playing bowls this year. There was a opportunity to play for Putaruru Lawn Bowls Club and I went along and thought that it was really cool.’’
