Awards boost business performance
By FLORENCE KERR Tokoroa sharemilkers Mark and Cathy Nicholas credit the Waikato Dairy Awards for helping improve their business performance.
The husband-and-wife team was announced as a finalist in the Waikato Dairy Awards Sharemilker/ Equity Farmer of the Year category.
“We have been involved with these awards for a few years and value it as an integral part of our business. It’s a great way for us to gauge where we are at with our business and areas that may need improvement,” says Mr Nicholas.
The couple and their two daughters, along with employee Roydon Marshall, sharemilk 285 cows on Albie and Barbara Kuttel’s farm in Tokoroa.
The couple also pay homage to their employers and the rural community for their support.
“Albie and Barbara have been fantastic employers for the past four years. We would also like to thank family and friends as well as Tony and Ali Van Der Heyden who were our first employers; they are an integral part of where we are today,” Mr Nicholas says.
The Nicholas’ are also humble about their past achievements with Mark winning the NZ Dairy Trainee of the year in 2009 and the couple placing third in the Waikato Dairy Awards in 2010. They also credit Dairy Base and Dairy Push for helping improve their business as a whole.
“It’s a team effort,” he says. “We get a lot of help from the rural community, which is a great network to be involved with.”
