South Waikato News - - SPORT -

Putaruru College’s First 15 rugby squad is off to compete at the Gold Coast Rugby Carnival.

The tournament will be held on July 6-14 and includes teams from New Zealand and Australia.

Coach James Amopiu said the Putaruru group has 25 players and six adults who each have to raise $3000.

‘‘ We started fundraising in September 2012 with raffles and car washes. We have a golf tournament coming up and a sponsors’ night,’’ Mr Amopiu said.

The team players are aged from 15 to 17-years-old competing in the Open 18 Division.

Mr Amopiu said his squad is excited for the competition.

‘‘I think we will do well, we intend to play well. The majority of this team I have had for three years or more.

‘‘They are excited to be going over to the competition. They are excited for the whole thing, to even go on a plane.

‘‘They are also really excited to play. We hope we don’t have to play any New Zealand teams, we want to play Australia.’’

He also admitted community support has been amazing.

‘‘We have been really grateful with the community support by the farmers and businesses,’’ he said.

The trip will also allow the teams to experience the Gold Coast’s attractions.

Putaruru College Sportfit coordinator TC Rata: ‘‘It (the competition) is played right next to the beach . . . You have beach games on day four, in between tournament games you go to Dream World, Wet and Wild.’’

The draw for the tournament will be sent out in April or May.
