Welch en­joys golden spell on the green

Bren­don Welch must be feel­ing pleased with his golf at present. In the space of two weeks he has won the match play Sum­mer Cup, and on Fe­bru­ary 17, won the Hand­i­cap Cup.

He blitzed a field of over 30 play­ers to win the Hand­i­cap Cup by 5 sta­ble­ford points.The next seven play­ers were de­cided by count­back: M Buck­ley, R Ru­dolf and B Watene all on 39 points, T Paiti and H Skelton on 38, and L Grylls and R Turia with 37. Twos were scored by B Welch, B Watene and G Shaw.

The Waikato Pen­nants sea­son has started well for the Toko­roa No 1 Team, which played Lochiel No 2 at Mata­mata. Af­ter be­ing down 1-2 in the morn­ing four­somes, the team ral­lied well to win the sin­gles 5.5 to a 1⁄2, for a sat­is­fy­ing 6.5 to 2 .5 win.

Re­sults from the Ladies Gil­bert and Sul­li­van Putting com­pe­ti­tion have Edna Ross lead­ing on count­back from Paula Pi­hama, both on 31 putts, fol­lowed closely by Deb­bie Hayes-Len­non on 32. In the scram­ble, Judy van Geest won with 42 points, Jenny Flavell 41, and Edna Ross and Heather Cox 39. Twos: Bar­bara Kut­tel and Edna Ross.

Re­sults from the New World Open Tour­na­ment held last Satur­day are: Ladies Gross, Deb­bie Hayes- Len­non 86, Nett, Shirley Buck­ley, and sta­ble­ford, Lor­raine Gil­bert, 41 and Linda Dick­en­son 38. The men’s di­vi­sion one gross, Ian Christie 72, Nett, Michael Mor­ris, and sta­ble­ford Brown Cortesi 41 pts. The sta­ble­ford run­ners-up; Rex Asi­ata, Gary Burke, Piki Daniels, Liam McKain and Nathaniel Cassidy. The Men’s di­vi­sion two gross was won by Teina Tekopua, the nett by Jack Baker, and the sta­ble­ford win­ners were: Teina Paku­toa (1st), Rob­bie Teina­garo, Lua Tafau, Tangi Tarai, Alan Blair, and Dave Ahuriri. Deb­bie Hayes-Len­non scored an ea­gle two on the par 4 15th. Twos: Shirley Buck­ley, Ian Christie and Rex Asi­ata.
