Welch enjoys golden spell on the green
Brendon Welch must be feeling pleased with his golf at present. In the space of two weeks he has won the match play Summer Cup, and on February 17, won the Handicap Cup.
He blitzed a field of over 30 players to win the Handicap Cup by 5 stableford points.The next seven players were decided by countback: M Buckley, R Rudolf and B Watene all on 39 points, T Paiti and H Skelton on 38, and L Grylls and R Turia with 37. Twos were scored by B Welch, B Watene and G Shaw.
The Waikato Pennants season has started well for the Tokoroa No 1 Team, which played Lochiel No 2 at Matamata. After being down 1-2 in the morning foursomes, the team rallied well to win the singles 5.5 to a 1⁄2, for a satisfying 6.5 to 2 .5 win.
Results from the Ladies Gilbert and Sullivan Putting competition have Edna Ross leading on countback from Paula Pihama, both on 31 putts, followed closely by Debbie Hayes-Lennon on 32. In the scramble, Judy van Geest won with 42 points, Jenny Flavell 41, and Edna Ross and Heather Cox 39. Twos: Barbara Kuttel and Edna Ross.
Results from the New World Open Tournament held last Saturday are: Ladies Gross, Debbie Hayes- Lennon 86, Nett, Shirley Buckley, and stableford, Lorraine Gilbert, 41 and Linda Dickenson 38. The men’s division one gross, Ian Christie 72, Nett, Michael Morris, and stableford Brown Cortesi 41 pts. The stableford runners-up; Rex Asiata, Gary Burke, Piki Daniels, Liam McKain and Nathaniel Cassidy. The Men’s division two gross was won by Teina Tekopua, the nett by Jack Baker, and the stableford winners were: Teina Pakutoa (1st), Robbie Teinagaro, Lua Tafau, Tangi Tarai, Alan Blair, and Dave Ahuriri. Debbie Hayes-Lennon scored an eagle two on the par 4 15th. Twos: Shirley Buckley, Ian Christie and Rex Asiata.
