Drag racer closing in on NZ title
Tokoroa junior dragster Jacob Recce is a teenager on the move.
The 15-year-old Forest View High School student provided a first for Motueka and the Nelson Drag Racing Association when he raced to victory on his junior drag bike at the 2013 NDRA Southern Nationals.
In doing so he smashed a national record with a time of 9.40 seconds over 201 metres.
With stunning results under his belt he is set to finish the season in top spot and claim the national championship crown.
‘‘I think there were 10 of us in the national series and there were five of us down there [in Motueka]. I had a race on the weekend as well in Tokoroa and I came first,’’ he said.
‘‘I am on 377 points and the second place is on 235 points; by the end I could be the national champion.
His most recent races are all part of a national series.
‘‘Yes, we have a five-series race, which is a five-round series and it is a national series.
‘‘We had Taupo on January 2 and I got runner-up there, Motueka I came first, last Sunday [ in Tokoroa] I got first. The nationals will be held on April 25, 26 and 27,’’ he said.
He added that he races as much as possible.
‘‘Every meeting that we can get. There is pretty much a meeting on every weekend.’’
