Drag racer clos­ing in on NZ ti­tle

Toko­roa ju­nior drag­ster Ja­cob Recce is a teenager on the move.

The 15-year-old For­est View High School stu­dent pro­vided a first for Motueka and the Nel­son Drag Rac­ing As­so­ci­a­tion when he raced to vic­tory on his ju­nior drag bike at the 2013 NDRA South­ern Na­tion­als.

In do­ing so he smashed a na­tional record with a time of 9.40 sec­onds over 201 me­tres.

With stun­ning re­sults un­der his belt he is set to fin­ish the sea­son in top spot and claim the na­tional cham­pi­onship crown.

‘‘I think there were 10 of us in the na­tional se­ries and there were five of us down there [in Motueka]. I had a race on the week­end as well in Toko­roa and I came first,’’ he said.

‘‘I am on 377 points and the sec­ond place is on 235 points; by the end I could be the na­tional cham­pion.

His most re­cent races are all part of a na­tional se­ries.

‘‘Yes, we have a five-se­ries race, which is a five-round se­ries and it is a na­tional se­ries.

‘‘We had Taupo on Jan­uary 2 and I got run­ner-up there, Motueka I came first, last Sun­day [ in Toko­roa] I got first. The na­tion­als will be held on April 25, 26 and 27,’’ he said.

He added that he races as much as pos­si­ble.

‘‘Ev­ery meet­ing that we can get. There is pretty much a meet­ing on ev­ery week­end.’’
