Give Jimbo the dog a knighthood

South Waikato News - - OPINION -

Dogs vs Rabbits. Dog is man’s best friend. Dogs save many lives each year. Dogs help the disabled and blind. Dogs catch drug dealers and other criminals. Meanwhile, rabbits spend their days eating farm pasture and breeding. Jimbo the dog ate a rabbit. Give Jimbo the dog a knighthood for services to farming. M Gardiner

Tirau face, it has spent more than $100,000, and still climbing, of ratepayers’ money, without a mandate from those who are funding their stupidity.

My good friend who is writing this for me has grown up with dogs and has trained them to championship standard, having won many provincial and centre championship dog trials.

Tokoroa devoted and intelligent, often more than owners.

Good on you Carrie King, I wish all dog owners were as loyal as you. We back you 100 per cent. S Lashlie Tokoroa devalued with mortgagee sales and people moving out of town.

Rent-to-buy houses that never sell because of over-inflation results in banks refusing to lend and houses become shabby, which is an eyesore.

What infuriated me was a letter to the editor (27/02/13) by C Beverly moaning about shops and a petrol station being built in Tokoroa. Rotorua has the cheapest fuel prices in New Zealand because of competition.

That city has booming retail outlets being built including consent for a K mart store in the central mall, Lynmore shopping development and the already built lake road shopping centre.

We don’t need more families or hydroslides at the ratepayers’ expense, we need more job creation that would bring the values of houses up so properties can be looked after. Creating business creates local investment and the spinoff is jobs, and Tokoroa needs to embrace its location near State Highway 1. Any whingers who live in the past should take a look at themselves. N Leathers

Tokoroa I’ve got a better idea for everyone. Never mind about stopping smoking – it is a long lost cause.

Instead let’s talk about a taboo subject, our kids are committing suicide in increasing numbers.

Talk about it. Sorry but it is not going to go away. It is killing our kids faster than smoking does wake up and face the facts people. Suicide can no longer be a taboo subject. Those of us who have lost someone because of it need to talk about it.

There is no help out there for the families. We have people like South Waikato SYS, RATS Riders Against Teen Suicide and CASPER. These groups are only private groups.

We need John Key and all the rest (of Parliament) to support groups like these. Stop smoking? Stop suicide first, it kills a lot faster. L Pinkerton
