Games up to expectations

South Waikato News - - SPORT -

After disappointing wins the week before against re-energised Leamington teams, the Senior As and Bs made the trek to Taupiri on Saturday, hoping to extract a win after their defeats in the first round.

Both games lived up to the intensity expected from second round games.

In the A’s game, coaches Che Harpur and Brad Boss must be pleased with their team’s win. It was a full team performance with each player doing their job.

Right from kick-off, SURF showed the opposition and the large crowd of spectators that they were going to leave everything on the paddock.

SURF went out to an early 8-nil lead with a try to lock Sam Pahewa and replied with two tries and a conversion, for a halftime score of 12-8 to Taupiri.

The dominance displayed by the smal ler but more mobile forward pack of SURF was evidenced by the scoring of three second-half tries by forwards John Balvert and Ned Honey (2). Taupiri were lucky to score a try in the dying stages of the game against the run of play making the final score SURF 28, Taupiri 17.

SURF B’s were first to extract retribution, beating Taupiri 27-18.

In the early stages of the game it appeared Taupiri were going to take another win as SURF conceded three penalties, only one of which, thankfully, was converted into points.

In the second half SURF asserted its dominance and tries were scored by Matt Mezaros, Josh Cameron and Jamin Pinkerton.

Two conversions by Fergusson gave SURF their final points of 27, Taupiri scoring only one penalty in the second half to take them to 18.

Notable performances were by Logan Costar, Jamin Pinkerton and Warwick Taylor. Player of the Day for SURF Bs was Logan Costar.
