Putaruru College has junior squash champ
Putaruru College has a new squash champion and the achievement marks the first time the school has reigned supreme in the category.
Student Levi Casey, 13, won the Junior Boys Individual title at the Waikato Secondary Schools Squash Tournament 2013 last week at the Hamilton Squash and Tennis Club.
His victory makes him the first from Putaruru College to do so.
Putaruru College Sportfit coordinator TC Rata said: ‘‘Yes, (this is) the first time someone has won. We have taken students in the past but either won plate sections or runner-up in plate or lower grades.’’
Levi’s mother, Sandra Ogle, said her son competed in three games on his way to winning the title.
‘‘He was very good,’’ she told South Waikato News a day after her son’s accomplishment.
Levi has been competing since he was eight years old.
‘‘He went on that court and played so well. I have never seen him play with so much passion before. He stepped on that court and really wanted it. He also had a little bit of pressure because the school had never won that title before,’’ she said.
