Macken­zie Dis­trict mayor Claire Bar­low wrote to South Waikato Mayor Neil Sin­clair in con­grat­u­la­tions say­ing: ‘‘We tried very hard to come out tops but your lo­cals did an amaz­ing job of spread­ing the word via Face­book so we have had to set­tle for sec­ond place.

‘‘I have to say that you have some very loyal and en­thu­si­as­tic lo­cals in Toko­roa and it is heart­en­ing to see.’’

Mr Sin­clair said he is ‘‘pretty damn

Be­cause ev­ery­one gets on with ev­ery­one, it doesn’t mat­ter what cul­ture you are from. In other towns dif­fer­ent eth­nic groups hang out with each other but here we all min­gle to­gether. proud. It is al­ways great to hear com­pli­ments from other may­ors about some­thing in my own dis­trict. It makes me proud of our town, our com­mu­nity and our coun­cil and what we achieve when we pull to­gether.’’
