A challenge of taking on responsibility was easily accomplished by Tokoroa High year nine students.

The opportunity arose for the young leaders to become mentors to primary students during a walk around Lake Moana-nui.

And they pulled it off, according to Tokoroa High teacher and Stars programme mentor Tony Jones.

Jones said close to 700 students from the high school and four primary schools took part.

Whakamaru, Central, David Henry and Strathmore primary students experienced the leadership from the new mentors.

Jones was impressed with how well the students led their groups.

Forty separate groups took on the 2.5-kilometre walk.
