Singular ideas feed multiple car builds

He is no Henry Ford but Kevin Warner can proudly say he has built more than 100 cars since he was 15 years old.

But they are not your usual run of the mill vehicles.

‘‘They are not your ideal hot rod or muscle cars, mine are crazy,’’ he said.

In fact, his latest project is putting a 2500cc quad cam Subaru engine into a Hillman Imp which originally had an 875cc.

‘‘ Everybody said it can’t be done, so I’m doing it,’’ Warner said.

The Tokoroa qualified mechanic, who works in a Rotorua VTNZ, fills his time with the hobby.

But once it’s done it’s on to the next one.

‘‘ I enjoy more the building of it, sometimes because it’s hard not because it’s easy; anybody could do easy,’’ he said.

The self proclaimed New Zealand’s oldest boy racer said he taught himself everything he knew.

And over the years he has struggled to pick a favourite.

‘‘At the time, the one I am doing is my favourite,’’ he said.
