Rate arrears no worry?

South Waikato News - - NEWS -

Almost 40 per cent of rates in arrears remain uncollected, yet only a few councillors seem concerned. The Finance, Audit and Risk Committee meeting revealed 63 per cent of rates in arrears were collected. Councillor Terry Magill believed the percentage was not good enough. ‘‘There is a substantial uncollected portion of rates – my view is it [arrears] is too high,’’ he said. Magill believed it was ‘‘unfair’’ to those who pay their rates on time. Chief executive Craig Hobbs said the council’s rates policy was ‘‘very good’’. Hobbs said South Waikato performed well in that department compared to ‘‘neighbours’’ of the district.
