Netball newbies score big

South Waikato News - - NEWS/OPINION -

New Zealand has a new champion motorcycle club. The Tokoroa-based South Waikato Motorcycle Club (SWMC) became the fourth club in five years to win the big annual Battle of the Clubs motocross. The fundraiser event will help send a Kiwi squad to the annual Motocross of Nations, in Latvia in September. The format for Saturday’s fundraiser motocross in Taupo was very similar to what the Team New Zealand trio can expect when they line up in Latvia. Each contestant rode twice, with the two worst results to be discarded so only 10 of the 12 results were counted in the final tally. FVHS Sport Results 28/6; FV Mixed Hockey 3 Taupo Nui 1; 1st XV Rugby 22 Otorohanga 29; U14 Rugby 32 Matamata 27; Senior Girls Football 7 Hamilton Girls 0; Junior Boys Football 2 Thames Valley 8. Scores are not only found on the netball court for the Spartan Newbies.

The newly formed South Waikato team won $ 1000 worth of gear from ANZ.

The grant consisted of a new set of playing uniforms, bibs, balls, inflation equipment and a gear bag.

A major upgrade from the seven- year old uniforms, mismatched bibs and a laundry basket they carried their equipment in previously.

Coach Dawn Ashworth said the team was created after a huge turnout to their existing team. ‘‘I play for the Spartan Masters and at our first training of the year we had 19 ladies turn up wanting to play and we definitely didn’t want to turn anyone away,’’ she said.

The Spartan name carried on but the resources did not go very far.

‘‘We’ve had to share gear between the two teams, which requires a lot of organisation,’’ she said.

A growing interest in the club has already led to plans of starting a new team.

‘‘We’ve already had another full team interested in joining next year and our goal is to welcome more and more ladies who want to come back to netball,’’ she said.

ANZ assistant branch manager Rawiri Wiki said they were noticed for their efforts.

‘‘ We’re really pleased to award the Spartan Newbies a uniform grant.

‘‘This is the first year these ladies have been playing together and they’ve been performing really well, winning all their games bar one so far,’’ he said.

This year ANZ is awarding netball grants worth $100,000.

Looking good: The Spartan Newbies can finally step on to their court in their own uniforms.
