Girl’s pretty cake wins expo event
It was a sweet victory for Olivia MacPherson, who claimed first prize with her cake design.
The 12-year-old took out the junior section in the inaugural Great GoBake cake decorating competition at an Auckland cake expo.
Her picnic-inspired cake design took hours of work over three days.
And this is only the second decorated cake she has made herself.
But it was definitely not an easy task. First, the planning and research had to be conducted and the intricate handmade decorations were another story.
It was a last-minute decision to enter but it was all worth the $200 gift card.
‘‘I was going to the cake expo already and so I decided to enter,’’ she said.
Although Olivia would happily devour a lemon sour cream cake any day, decorating it was the most fun.
‘‘I can design different things and get creative,’’ she said.
Olivia takes after her mother Cathryn, who is a keen baker and is setting up her own business.
It was a proud moment for the mother of three when she received the news.
‘‘For her to take it out, it’s just big,’’ Cathryn said.
Olivia is keen to enter the competition again next year with a jungle theme.
