Major price for stud hereford from Okawa

South Waikato News - - RURAL DELIVERY - By GERALD PIDDOCK

It’s a record-priced bovine that is, in the words of its purchaser, ‘‘the complete bull’’.

Called Okawa Major, the hereford bull was recently bought by Waikato stud breeders Bruce and Pip Robinson for $55,000 from David Morrow’s Okawa Stud in Mid Canterbury in early June.

That price set a national record for hereford sales in 2014.

The Robinsons will use the bull on their farm, the Kokonga Hereford Stud for many years to come.

The Robinsons bought the bull from David Morrow’s Okawa Stud in Mid Canterbury in June.

‘‘It’s got plenty of length and it will grow into a decent bull and it’s got carcass as well.

‘‘He’s everything we want in a bull and everything we want to breed in a bull. Every time I see him, the more I like him,’’ Pip Robinson said.

The father and son’s stud farm is in the Waikaretu Valley on the North Island’s west coast, west of Huntly. It is 1296 hectares and farms 3500 ewes, 1100 cattle along with their 130 cow breeding herd.

Its estimated breeding values, which are used as a guide by farmers when they purchase a bull, were also outstanding.

There was also a lot of interest in the bull among hereford breeders ahead of its sale and bidding was competitive when it was put under the hammer, especially from Hawke’s Bay hereford stud, Glenbrae Farm.

‘‘I thought we might have knocked them out at $40,000 but they kept going right up to $50,000. It was very keenly contested,’’ Robinson said.

Immediately after it was bought, Robinson had requests from other breeders to sell the bull’s semen and Morrow retained 100 semen straws to use in his own herd.

It also had amazing pedigree coming from, in Robinson’s opinion, the best herd of hereford cattle in New Zealand.

‘‘You buy with confidence from David Morrow,’’ he said.

Morrow’s genetic prefix (stud name) was in bulls all over the country and in cow herds in the South Island.

‘‘He’s just a fantastic operator,’’ Robinson said.

‘‘His philosophy on cattle is what we want to mirror. He’s got a real focus on his cow herd.’’

‘‘He’s got high milking cows and high fertility.

‘‘It should rear great calves which turn into great bulls.

‘‘He’s doing that and he’s done it.’’ – Fairfax NZ
