Upper North Island Secondary School netball tournament provided a week of learning for both Forest View and Tokoroa High School.

Both teams, sitting in C grade, were tested mentally and physically at the 2014 UNISS tournament.

Tokoroa High School came away in eighth place while Forest View came 20th.

Tokoroa High head coach Taneta Riki said despite the challenges, her players were extremely disciplined

‘‘Overall I thought the girls really stood up every single game. I think they realise, even myself, that the level has really gone up when you’re looking at the top eight in each grade so they had some really really tight games where they had to stand up and fight for everything.’’

Oustanding performances came from captains Dionne Treadaway and Paris John through their inspiring leadership, she said. Midcourters Chantae Wilson- Jenkins and Tiare Manu proved their worth.

‘‘These girls have been our strong unit all season. At the start of the tournament I needed their level to really stand up and both girls took that challenge on board and delivered.’’

Young shooter Dallas Te Hiko debuted for the side in one of the final games and Riki said it was a promising sign of the depth the school has in that area.

Next year’s focus will be on developing that depth and ensuring the girls get more game time against players their own age, Riki said.

‘‘ We had amazing support from the school. Everything the team needed the school made sure we had,’’ Riki said.

The team’s physio Rachael Parker was a game maker too, she said.

‘‘It came down to if she said they [the players] were good to go then they went on court.’’

Team manager Caroline Morunga did an amazing job as did the two support crew Piki Kelly and Apii Solomon, Riki said.

‘‘Coaches always know when it comes to tournaments managers do all the hard yards.’’
