College team takes a shot at nationals

South Waikato News - - NEWS - By CAITLIN WALLACE

Chocolates and raffles have helped the Putaruru College clay target shooting team get to the nationals and their next goal is to win.

The 10-member team has not only trained hard but also had to fundraise to get there.

The team has to raise $10,000 to get to the NZ secondary schools championships in Christchurch on September 27.

Principal and team manager Mike Ronke said fundraising had been ‘‘ successful’’ with ‘‘much public support’’.

Though they continue to fundraise it is time to focus on the ultimate goal.

‘‘The prime focus is to have what coach Peter Goodwin thinks is a realistic tilt at a national title.

‘‘With effectively two weeks to the competition, team members are training towards main- taining consistency in their shooting, getting their heads right and remaining a steady focus,’’ he said.

Ronke said the students were going as a team but they each needed to perform well as individuals to get the best result.

Students will perform over three disciplines: single rise, points score and single barrel.

A college team competed last year and came sixth.

Aiming high: The Putaruru College shooting team is hoping to come away with a win at the national secondary schools competition.
