Game with All Blacks highlight at rippa

South Waikato News - - SPORT -

Coming sixth place in the New Zealand Rippa Rugby Nationals was an awesome coup for the St Marys year 5 and 6 team but playing bullrush against the All Blacks was the peak of the tournament.

The young side travelled down to Wellington for the competition on September 8 and 9 after three qualifying tournaments held in Tokoroa and Hamilton earlier this year.

St Marys Putaruru went through as the top team to represent the Waikato region, and certainly proved their worth coming sixth out of the top 20 teams in the country.

They took off to a ripper of a start, qualifying in the top eight and making the quarterfinals after day one.

But in a tough match up against Bay of Plenty they lost the quarter which ultimately saw them play off for fifth and sixth against Otago – another close loss.

Coach Greg Fladgate said it was an amazing experience for his players, one that provided so many firsts including the plane trip down and meeting and playing games against the All Blacks.

Touch down: St Marys Putaruru proved their worth at the National Rippa Rugby tournament in Wellington, coming in at sixth place.
