Fun memories flood back

What happened in the forest stayed in the forest – that is until it came to the NZ Forest Products reunion of course.

Former NZ Forest Products employee Gerry Portegys laughed when asked about the stories told by former employees.

There were many that were best left untold but the weekend long reunion was a memory in itself for the 120 attendees.

‘‘ There were people that I hadn’t seen in 40 years.’’

The weekend included a meet and greet on the first night followed by a field trip to South Waikato forests.

Portegys said it was a shock for some when they saw the amount of forestry to farming conversions.

During the evening’s event Portegys was subject to many tales.

‘‘We did a burn off one time in preparation for planting and a message went through saying there was a fire at the KK block.’’

Portegys sent his worker to help with the helicopter however it never arrived.

‘‘The supervisor there said to me ‘Gerry where is this bloody chopper’.’’

It turned out the Portegys’ burn off was being put out instead of the KK block fire.

He said the success of the reunion could lead to another one in the future.
