Rugby cup tickets v bag of groceries

South Waikato News - - NEWS / SPORT -

Thanks for South Waikato District Council staff came down to a box of cherries and banana muffins this year.

Information received under the Official Information Act revealed a 2014 gift register, recorded only from ‘‘collective memory’’, was a little less exciting for South Waikato than some councils around the country.

In 2012 Waikato Regional Council councillors were wined and dined at a Rugby World Cup match by dairy giant Fonterra while last year an Invercargill councillor requested a park bench in a cemetery as her retirement present.

But here in little old South Waikato workers are being thanked with groceries including bottles of wine a box of cherries, liquorice and muffins.

Some of the more elaborate gifts to Mayor Neil Sinclair included a silk painting given during the Chinese consul visit.

A gifts register does not come under legislative law.
