Tournament for cancer lodge
Just how much the Tirau Lions Club Charity Golf tournament has raised in its 40-plus years of running will never quite be known.
But having come up with more than $20,000 from the past two years’ events is a sure sign that figure is substantial.
Every year since the club was established it has run a charity golf tournament that attracts up to 90 competitors.
All the proceeds are donated to a charity of the club’s choice which, for the past two years, has been the Cancer Society’s Lions Lodge in Hamilton.
This year will be the third and final donation to the cause.
Fundraising committee member Murray McAlister said the support from South Waikato and Matamata- Piako businesses is phenomenal. ‘‘They are just so generous.’’ And this year is shaping up to be a good one too, he said.
‘‘So far we seem to be getting a really good response.’’
And that is because the cause strikes a chord with most, he said.
‘‘So many people have got a [cancer] story they can relate to.’’
The tournament kicks off on Waitangi Day, February 6 with a 2 tee rolling start from 9-11.30am. Entry costs $20.
