A lack of visitors has forced Tirau Library to close. South Waikato District Council decided the facility will close permanently from July 1. Less than 4 per cent of Tirau residents used the library and only half of those used it regularly. ‘‘The library certainly has some passionate followers who would like to keep it open but these numbers are small,’’ chief executive Craig Hobbs said. In its absence, an outreach programme will run from the Putaruru Library from the existing budget. The programme will provide a delivery of library services to residents. ‘‘We’re looking at a better use of our resources,’’ mayor Neil Sinclair said.
